UK PhD Scholarships in Political Science and International Studies at University of Birmingham

Postgraduate Research Scholarships
The Department is offering two scholarships of £10,000/year for 3 years to new applicants starting a PhD research degree in the Department of Political Science and International Studies, 2007/8

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
The £10,000 scholarship comprises two parts:
A lump sum scholarship component of approximately £6500 per year
A component of approximately £3500 per year comprising income from Graduate Teaching Assistant duties. These duties will consist of four hours of teaching per week during term time, two office hours per week during term time, and examination and coursework marking duties. Specific rates of pay and conditions will be specified by contract.


Applicants will be expected to apply to external sources of funding also; if they are successful, they will be expected to take up the external funding rather than the University of Birmingham scholarship.


The scholarship competition is open to Home, EU and International students, studying on a full time basis.


Existing Postgraduate Research students in the Department of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Birmingham are not eligible to apply.


A scholarship committee comprising the Head of Department, Director of the Graduate School, Director of Postgraduate Research and the Research Director, will select the successful applicants. Applicants may be required to participate in a telephone interview. The decision of the committee cannot be appealed.

PhD proposal of up to two typed A4 pages (in 12 point font) covering the rationale for and significance of the proposed research, the theoretical framework for the thesis, and the methodology to be used. Candidates may attach bibliographic references only on an additional sheet.

PhD Studentship in Nerve Biomechanics - Open University (UK)

PhD Studentship Department of Biological Sciences and Department of Physics and Astronomy

Funded full-time PhD Studentship for three years from 1 October 2007

This interdisciplinary project will investigate the structural features of peripheral nerves that enable them to bend and stretch during normal movement without compromising their function. Understanding nerve biomechanics will not only give an insight into some fundamental anatomy, it will also be of value to clinicians treating nerve injury and physiotherapists involved in rehabilitation.

The project will (i) use electron microscopy to investigate the ultrastructure of peripheral nerve tissue that causes localised variations in biomechanics, and (ii) use ultrasound imaging technologies to study variations in nerve movement at different anatomical locations in human volunteers for correlation of findings.

The project is funded by the Open University and is a collaboration between Dr James Phillips (Biological Sciences) and Dr Jamie Harle (Physics and Astronomy), based in the recently refurbished laboratory facilities at the OU Headquarters in Milton Keynes. You should have a good honours degree in a Biological Science and have a keen interest in using interdisciplinary approaches to investigate biological phenomena.

PhD Studentship in Computational Neuroscience and Biomimetic Robotics

An EPSRC-supported PhD studentship is available to study computational models of the brain systems governing gaze control and visual attention.

The proposed project is associated with a substantial, multi-centre EPSRC grant Integrative computation for autonomous agents: a novel approach based on the vertebrate brain http://www.abrg.group.shef.ac.uk/reverb/public/. This multidisciplinary project is shared between the University of Sheffield, other academic collaborators, and an industrial partner - BAE Systems. The studentship is rare opportunity for someone to work as part of a large team of internationally recognised partners.

The project will implement biologically constrained models of motion processing on an existing robotic eye-head’ platform and presented with wide-field visual stimuli on a large immersive display (of the kind used in flight simulators). The modelling and stimulus generation will require competent programming skills preferably in C/C++ and Matlab.

The studentship is open to applicants resident in the UK for at least 3 years, who have a first class or upper second class degree in engineering, mathematics or the physical sciences. A stipend will be paid at or above the EPSRC’s standard rate (GBP 12,300 in 2007-8) for a maximum of four years.

The Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) is used to evaluate whether international students who wish to study at the undergraduate level at universities or other such higher educational institutions in Japan possess the Japanese language skills and the basic academic abilities needed to study at those institutions.

EJU takes the place of both the Japanese Language Proficiency Test and the General Examination for Foreign Students (no longer administered as of December 2001), which many universities (undergraduate level) and other higher educational institutions in Japan previously required international students to take for admission. Starting in 2002, EJU will be administered twice a year (June and November) in Japan and other countries and regions. For a list of examination sites, see “Examination sites.”

EJU includes the following subject tests: Japanese as a Foreign Language, Science (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology), Japan and the World, and Mathematics. Applicants select which subject tests to take based on the requirements of the Japanese university they wish to enter. The examination is available in Japanese or English, and applicants may specify, at the time of application, the examination language they wish to take (the Japanese as a Foreign Language test is administered in Japanese only).

The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) for Quantum Dynamics in Physics, Chemistry and Biology is a graduate school offering a doctoral degree program inthese disciplines.The IMPRS is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics, Ruprecht-Karls University, the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the Max Planck Institute for Medical reserach (all in Heidelberg) and the Heavy Ion Research Center (GSI) in Darmstadt. Summary Position:
• Responsible for daily sample analysis from whole plant area as directed by supervisor, maintaining all laboratory equipments, planning & organizing the usage and availability of consumable materials for laboratory, and ensure the implementation of company safety policy.

Success Candidate should have:
1. Senior Technical School/High School in Physics/Biology science (IPA)
2. Minimum 3 year comprehensive experience in laboratory analysis
3. Understand laboratory equipments, analysis process & procedure (analysis of distillation, flash point, H2S content, Sulphur content, vapour pressure, BS&W, oil content in water, CCR (Conradson Carbon Residue), SG/API Gravity, etc.)
4. Familiar with Ms. Word & Ms. Excel.

Security Coordinator

Summary Position:
• Responsible for Provide leadership to assure a secure and safe workplace and promote optimal physical security of employees, assets, documents and operational and related facilities by implementing Security and Safety procedures. Developed and Implement a Security Management System for CSEL field operations together with CSEL HSE Department; implement ISPS Code (Security standard for Ship and Port) and communicate with RSO (Recognize Security Organization). Plan, maintain and coordinate all security programs, include in house security training.
• Handle and anticipate any labor disruptions, strikes, riots, mass demonstrations, and other escalation of normal working conditions. Assist CSEL HSE and emergency Response team in any emergency situation, establish and maintain the good and healthy cooperation and relationship with local and national security institutions in Indonesia (MABES POLRI, POLDA, BRIMOB, MARINE or ARMY) as per prevailing regulation and Company’s Instruction.

Success Candidate should have:
1. The Field Security Coordinator shall be a minimum Ex Komisaris Polisi or Major level or equivalent.
2. 5 years in industrial security services and can give training will be advantage
3. Organised and methodical self-starter requiring minimum supervision
4. Proven computer skills with Microsoft Office software for the preparation of documents, spreadsheets, presentations and databases.


General Qualification:
• Indonesian Citizen, max. 40 years old
• Preferably of Ambon residence
• Physically fit and good medical record
• Willing to work under pressure situation and condition in remote area and overseas assignment on rotation basis if required.

Multidisciplinary Summer REU in Computation and Control of Biological and Biologically Inspired Systems

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Texas Tech University will host a multidisciplinary undergraduate research program in computation and control of biological and biologically inspired systems. This program will be sponsored by the National Science Foundation REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) and the Department of Defense ASSURE (Awards to Stimulate and Support Undergraduate Research Education). This 8-week summer research experience is scheduled to be held between June 04, 2007 to July 27, 2007 and it will support eight-ten undergraduate students and a K-12 teacher. The proposed REU program will consist of interesting and challenging projects arising from computational modeling, systems & control, geometric modeling, and applications of complex analytic methods.

Applicants must be undergraduate students who will be completing their junior or senior year by June 2007. Every selected student participant will be provided a stipend of $2,400, free on-campus housing and meals, and a travel allowance up to $500. Students with a strong background in advanced calculus, linear algebra and differential equations are eligible to apply. Women and underrepresented minorities are particularly encouraged to apply. Please note that under NSF rules, only U.S. Citizens and permanent residents are eligible to receive stipends and support for housing and travel costs. PhD Student Position in Soft Condensed Matter and Biophysics Research

A position of a Research Assistant leading to a PhD degree will be available in the area of soft condensed matter and biophysics.

We shall study structural and dynamic properties of concentrated protein solutions and mixtures as well as their dominating interaction forces, aggregation phenomena and phase transitions such as liquid-liquid phase separation and crystal and glass formation. Particular emphasis will be given to a special class of proteins, the so-called lens crystallins.
The lens proteins are particularly interesting and important as they are ideally suited for an attempt to use well defined and monodisperse proteins as model systems for colloids as well as because of their biological and medical relevance for cataract formation. Cataract is a gradual clouding of the eye lens, and a leading cause of blindness, worldwide. The main techniques used in this project will be optical microscopy, small-angle neutron (SANS) and X-ray (SAXS) as well as static and dynamic (SLS, DLS) light scattering.

In addition, the experimental program will be combined with Monte Carlo and Brownian dynamics computer simulations performed at IRRMA (Institut Romand de Recherche Numerique en Physique des Materiaux), a center of excellence in computational condensed matter physics located on the campus of the EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne).

The project will be conducted at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, in close collaboration with a European Marie Curie research training network. The PhD student will thus have the opportunity to collaborate with a European network of leading institutions and perform some of the experiments in different laboratories and large-scale research facilities.

Senior Internal Auditor

Job Purpose:
Plans and executes assigned internal audits of operational, financial and administrative activities, contracts, computer systems and major projects. Knowledge Skills and Experience:

• Bachelor Degree from a recognized University or College and recognized membership of a professional accounting body (CA, ACA, CMA).
• Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designation and a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors

Scholarship Awards

Create a Great Resume

The purpose of a resume is to highlight your qualifications and get you an interview. Your resume, along with your cover letter, introduces you to an employer. It lets him/her know who you are and what you have to offer.

The perfect resume is targeted to the specifics of the job description. Tailoring your resume shows that you've done your homework and highlights the skills you possess that are relevant to the job.

Resumes can follow a variety of styles and formats, but most contain the same basic information:

Identifying Information: This section includes basic contact information, including your name, mailing address, phone number, and email address. If you have a Web site that is relevant to the job for which you’re applying, include that here, too.

Objective: This is really just a brief description of your immediate career goals. The key is to keep it short and concise and to make it relevant to the job for which you are applying. If your objective is vague, leave it out.

Education: This section details your past and current educational endeavors. List degrees, diplomas, or certificates you have earned or are working toward. Start with the most recent and work your way back. Include the name of the school, degree, major, date of graduation, and honors or academic accomplishments.

Work Experience: This is a summary of your work experience. List your most recent or current job first and work your way back. Include your job title, the name and location of the organization, and the dates you worked. Describe your job duties and accomplishments briefly using strong action verbs. Military, intern, and volunteer experiences may be included here or detailed in another section.

Make a great impression.
The interview is your chance to show that you are the best person for the job. Your application or resume has already exhibited that you are qualified. Now it ’s up to you to show how your skills and experience match this position and this company.

The employer will be looking and listening to determine if you are a good fit. He/she will be looking for a number of different qualities, in addition to the skills that you possess. To make the best impression, dress appropriately; sell your strengths; arrive early, by about 10-15 minutes; be enthusiastic; shake hands firmly; be an active listener; sit up straight and maintain eye contact; ask questions.

Say "thank you".

Keep it brief. Cover letters rarely need to be longer than one page. You can usually sum it up in about four paragraphs:

This is often the last question you will be asked in an interview. Prepare for it. This is your chance to restate the skills you possess that are most relevant to the position and to summarize your other qualities that make you the perfect person for the job. In formulating your answer, be sure to address these areas:

1. Determine their goals for the position. This should come up during your research into the company and into the position. If possible, talk to others who work for the company. Identify your skills and recognize their value

Tell me about yourself.
That is usually one of the first things that an employer will say in an interview. What he/she is really asking is what qualifies you for this position. Your response will set the tone for the rest of the interview, so your best bet is to prepare your answer in advance.

Think of your answer as a 60-second commercial in which you sell yourself. Know the job description for the position you are going for and tailor your comments to match. Your script may vary slightly depending on the position, but the foundation will always be based on your skills.

Assess yourself.
The first step in composing your commercial is self-assessment. To get started, it may help to review your resume. Look at the jobs that you have held and decide what skills you used for each.

Make a list of at least ten of your strengths and skills. Use active words that reflect what you have done. Include both job specific skills, such as your ability to use a computer, and your "soft" skills, such as your ability to organize or your attention to detail.

Evaluate how each of your skills will be useful to the position you are seeking. Decide which seem most relevant. Write them down. These will be the basis of your commercial.

Compose your message.
Now, you are ready to put your commercial together. It will help to write down exactly what you want to say, so that you can practice and be sure not to miss any major points.

Start with a brief introduction of yourself. Include your name and your usual line of work. Then, state what position you are seeking. This part may vary depending on the interview. Next, you will get into your skills. Start with your job skills and work into your "soft" skills.

Sell your experience.
Employers are interested in what you have done. Use action words to tell them. They are clear, concise and direct – all strengths that impress employers in an interview. Strong words include:

You may say something like "With the education and experience I bring, I would expect to start at the higher end of that scale."

Remember, your skills and experience are the basis of your negotiations. The employer is not interested in your personal finances or the number of children you are trying to support. It’s not about what you "need", but about what your skills are worth and why.
